Termites are a topic nobody likes to talk about. However, the costs of not talking about termites — and the damage they can cause — is much worse. As one of Green Country’s most experienced termite inspection companies, we know how to spot the signs of termites.
However, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Or in this case, an ounce of prevention can potentially save thousands of dollars in repairing termite damage. The following six tips will help prevent termite activity.
Get rid of moisture – Moisture is like beach-front property to bugs and can attract all kinds of pests and termites into your home. Subterranean termites need moisture to survive, so keep your gutters clean and make sure grading directs water away from your home.
Fix leaks – Pay close attention to any decay or leaks in your house. Termites love moisture-laden walls. Repair any leaks ASAP.
Declutter your house inside and out – Get rid of unneeded cellulose material at the interior and exterior of the home. Termites are constantly foraging for food and are looking for anything celulose. Get rid of wood piles, wood debris, piles of papers, cardboards, newspapers, and old magazines.
Separate soil from wood – Make sure you keep soil and wood apart. This will help act as a barrier and reduce chances for activity. If you do have activity, you are much more likely to see evidence.
Spray borate on wood before priming or painting – Borate is one of the most popular termite repellents, and should be sprayed on wood before priming and painting. Borate gets absorbed into the wood, preventing the wood from being a termite buffet. Once it’s absorbed, you can prime and paint it normally. Borate is safe, but extremely potent, and protects wood from termite damage for decades.
Move items regularly – Termites don’t like to be disturbed, by moving items regularly, activity and damage can be prevented. You are also more likely to observe activity if items are moved.
