CSST stands for corrugated stainless steel tubing. It is a flexible yellow gas pipe found in many new or remodeled homes. If CSST isn't properly bonded there is a potential for lightning to directly or indirectly strike the home and cause an electrical arc. This can penetrate the tubing causing a gas leak or fire. |
The Construction Industries Board requires all home inspectors who find a yellow CSST during inspection must report "Manufacturers believe this product is safer if properly bonded and grounded as required by the manufacture's installation instructions. Proper bonding and grounding of the product can only be determined by a licensed electrical contractor." CSST manufacturers have improved some of the their products and bonding is not required by the manufacturer. These types of CSST pipes will not be yellow.
If you see the above written on your inspection report, you'll know why it's important to get your CSST pipes checked. How much will it cost? It varies. The cost varies greatly based on several factors: distance to the homes bonding rod and access to easily run the wire. In our experience, bonding CSST has cost as little as $256 or as much as $650.
