A grinder pump is designed to flush waste that does not flow quick enough through the system on its own. It does this by grinding up the waste which forms a slurry and then pumping it through the sewer system.
You will need to be very careful what you flush down the toilet or sink if you have a grinder pump. Some of the items that should never be placed in there are cat litter, aquarium gravel, plastics, toxic chemicals, grease which will build up in the grinder pump tank, feminine hygiene products and diapers.
If the home experiences a power outage for any reason, the grinder pump will not work. To prevent an overfill in the tank, try to use as little water as you can.
Before leaving the house for a length of time make sure you remember to run the water long enough so that the pump activates. This will leave clean water in the tank and help to stop any nasty odors from escaping.
A grinder pump should not be connected to a sump pump. This would use unnecessary amounts of electricity and overwork the pump.
