If you think of the conditions bacteria need to thrive, heat, moisture and little natural sunlight, its easy to see why a gym is the perfect condition for it. Did you know that in one study, gym equipment was found to have way more bacteria on it than that found on a toilet seat? So, what can we do to protect ourselves as much as possible while working out?
Obviously, we are constantly touching something when we are at the gym, so make sure that before and after you exercise, you wash your hands thoroughly. Also, be conscious not to touch your face to avoid spreading germs.
Never go barefoot at a gym. There are all kinds of communicable conditions you could get from not wearing shoes. Take a pair of flip flops with you, especially if you are using a sauna or steam room.
Take your own towels with you. This way, you know that they have not been used by anyone else. The rules for washing towels in a gym is not as strict as a place like a hospital, so it’s best to be on the safe side and use your own. Use one of your towels to place under you when you are sitting on gym equipment or in the sauna, and another to wipe away your sweat.
