We are now very aware of how damaging to our health exposure to pesticides is, especially prolonged exposure. We see an obvious need then, to limit that exposure. What are some of the ways we can reduce this exposure when using pesticides in or around our homes?

As is always mentioned when it comes to any kind of household chemical, is the importance of keeping any type of pesticide out of the reach of children. Make sure to label these items well.

Protecting your skin is also a very obvious step, but this very often gets overlooked. Make sure to wear long sleeve shirts and good protective gloves, protective eye wear and an appropriate breathing mask. A word of caution though, if you like to use leather gloves. Pesticide stays on leather, which means each time you wear them after using it, you are exposing yourself to it each time. The only way to ensure you will not be exposed again is to discard the gloves. The same applies for other leather items such as watch straps. If you value these items, its best not to wear them for this task.

Good ventilation is also a key step. When mixing or handling the pesticide, if you can, do this out of doors. If this is not a possibility, make sure the area is a well ventilated as possible. Its important to keep the area of pesticide application well ventilated also.

Various plants are good for acting as natural bug and insect deterrents. You could plant some of these types around your house. Prevention is always a better option than pesticide use.

If you are about to have a home built, this would be a good time to consider using construction materials that are not so appealing to pests, such as termites for example.

So as we can see, there are varying measures we can take to limit our exposure to harmful pesticides. Health and safety is always of prime importance when it comes to our customers.
